Alaafin-Elect Akeem Owoade Officially Declares Royal Title as Palace Enforces 21-Day Sacred Seclusion Rites, Imposes Nighttime Curfew Across Oyo
The Alaafin-elect of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade, has officially declared his royal title. In a statement from the palace on Tuesday, it was announced that he shall be formally addressed as:
His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.
The statement emphasized that the numeral “I” after Owoade represents a Roman numeral, not the English number “1.” The palace urged the public and media to adhere strictly to the exact wording without alterations.
This announcement comes as the Alaafin-elect undergoes the 21-day traditional rites, “Oro Ipebi”, a sacred seclusion ritual mandatory before ascending the throne. The rites, which began on March 7, 2025, will conclude on March 29, 2025.
As part of the ritual, a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM has been imposed across Oyo township. The palace warned that violators will be detained until 7 AM the following day.
The palace reaffirmed that Oro Ipebi is a non-negotiable tradition and must be fully respected by all.
