Nsulu Landowners Reject 1,025-Hectare Abia Airport Land Acquisition, Cite Threat to Farmlands, Housing, and Livelihoods, Demand Transparency and Legal Compliance

Landowners in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State, have strongly opposed the government’s plan to acquire 1,025 hectares of land for the proposed Abia Airport, citing severe consequences for their communities.

In an open letter to Governor Alex Otti, the landowners warned that the massive land loss would lead to insufficient space for farming, housing, and essential needs—ultimately resulting in hunger, starvation, and the potential extinction of their communities. They also raised concerns about increased poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

Pointing to airports in Owerri, Ebonyi, and Enugu, which occupy between 250 and 360 hectares, they argued that Abia’s airport does not require such an extensive landmass. They suggested a compromise of 400 hectares, balancing development with community survival.

The landowners also demanded transparency regarding the land survey and acquisition process, rejecting what they described as the government’s forceful approach. They criticized the appointment of government-selected representatives without their consent and opposed additional projects such as hotels, a housing estate, and a school on their land.

Furthermore, they called on the government to respect a court order halting the project, insisting that any further actions would undermine the rule of law and erode public trust.
