“Assembly Complex Must Be Completed in Six Months to Restore Legislative Functions and Governance Structure in Rivers State” – Ibas Directs Contractors During Inspection

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), has directed the contractor handling the reconstruction of the State Assembly Complex to expedite work and meet the agreed timeline.

During his visit to the project site on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, Ibas emphasized that restoring full legislative activities was a key part of his mandate. His inspection comes amid previous accusations by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to rebuild the complex, which was demolished in 2023 due to political tensions.

The project, awarded to Monier Construction Company (MCC) by Fubara, features a two-story building with 34 en-suite offices, an elevator, gallery, meeting rooms, and a conference hall. MCC’s General Manager, Engr Omaka Oko, led Ibas and Rivers State Civil Service Head, Dr. George Nwaeke, on a tour of the site.

Ibas, who assumed duties recently, stressed the importance of legislative functionality in the state’s governance structure. He reiterated the government’s financial commitment to the project and urged the contractors to adhere to their schedule.

“My duty is to restore law and order, and the legislature is a crucial part of that process,” Ibas stated. “The funds have been provided, and the contractors must ensure timely completion.”

With six months to reestablish effective governance, Ibas remains focused on ensuring the legislative arm is fully operational.
