INEC Receives Recall Petition Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Over 200,000 Kogi Central Voters Demand Her Removal Following Suspension and Allegations of Misconduct
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Nigerian Senate.
INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, confirmed receipt of the petition on Monday, stating that due process would be followed in line with constitutional provisions.
The petition, signed by over 200,000 registered voters in Kogi Central, claims to meet the constitutional requirements for a recall. It follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate on March 6 over alleged “gross misconduct” amid a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she had previously accused of sexual harassment.
Representatives of the petitioners, including Comrade Salihu Habeeb and Comrade Hamza Yakubu, expressed confidence in the recall’s success, citing dissatisfaction with the senator’s performance.
A Federal High Court in Lokoja had earlier lifted an injunction preventing INEC from receiving the petition, affirming the constituents’ right to initiate the recall process.
