Kogi Prison Break: Five of Twelve Escaped Inmates Recaptured as Authorities Launch Manhunt and Nationwide Security Audit to Prevent Future Incidents

KOTON-KARFE, KOGI STATE – The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, resulting in the escape of 12 inmates early Monday, March 24, 2024. NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, reported that five of the escapees have been recaptured.

According to the official statement, the inmates manipulated padlocks in a section of the facility, enabling their escape. Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, swiftly mobilized security agencies and the Kogi State government’s Senior Special Assistant to respond to the incident. Personnel were deployed to secure the facility and initiate a manhunt.

“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice,” the statement read.

A comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the escape, and a nationwide security audit of correctional facilities is underway. The NCoS has assured the public that security measures are being reinforced across all custodial centers.

Citizens are urged to report any suspicious activities to security agencies to assist in the recapture of the seven remaining escapees.
