Security Forces Foil Another Pipeline Explosion in Rivers as Labour Threatens Strike Over Emergency Rule, Court Asked to Sack Sole Administrator
Security operatives in Rivers State have successfully prevented another attempt to blow up a major pipeline, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure amid rising political tensions. The joint operation, carried out by the Nigerian Police Force alongside the Army, Navy, and Air Force, led to the death of a suspect who was attempting to detonate explosives at a pipeline in the Aluu-Rumuekpe area of Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, while addressing the media, emphasized the importance of the joint security efforts in ensuring stability in the state following the declaration of emergency rule. He noted that the collaborative strategy had significantly contributed to peace and prevented criminal elements from exploiting the situation.
“Our operations have been crucial in maintaining order and preventing the destruction of critical national assets. We are committed to ensuring that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Adepoju stated.
Security forces have also intensified crackdowns on criminal activities, arresting eight suspected kidnappers and rescuing six victims in Ahoada East. Weapons, motorcycles, and explosives were recovered in separate operations targeting crime syndicates across the state. Authorities also reported dismantling multiple illegal oil refining sites and seizing thousands of liters of stolen crude oil and refined diesel.
Labour Threatens Strike Over Emergency Rule
Meanwhile, tensions continue to mount as organized labour in Rivers State, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has issued a warning to the Federal Government, demanding an immediate reversal of the emergency rule. Labour leaders argue that the suspension of the state governor and deputy governor has worsened economic hardship, with local government workers yet to receive salaries.
In a joint statement, the labour unions highlighted concerns over the economic impact of the state of emergency, warning that a prolonged crisis could discourage investors and deepen the state’s financial struggles.
“If the Federal Government fails to reverse the emergency rule within a reasonable timeframe, we will be left with no choice but to embark on industrial action,” the statement read.
Legal Battle to Sack Rivers Sole Administrator Begins
Adding to the controversy, a legal challenge has been filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to remove the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ette Ibas (retd.). The lawsuit, filed by legal practitioner Johnmary Jideobi, argues that the appointment of a sole administrator is unconstitutional and that only an elected governor should govern the state.
The plaintiff is also asking the court to bar the President from appointing sole administrators in any state, stating that such actions violate democratic principles.
New Appointments Amid Political Unrest
Despite the crisis, the Rivers State government has continued administrative changes, with Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibas appointing legal expert Prof. Ibibia Worika as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The appointment comes after the resignation of the Head of Service, George Nwaeke, who stepped down amid the ongoing political turmoil.
As Rivers State grapples with security threats, political disputes, and economic uncertainties, both the government and opposition forces remain locked in a high-stakes battle over the state’s future.
