UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin Criticizes FIFA’s Proposal to Expand 2030 World Cup to 64 Teams, Calling it “A Bad Idea”

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed strong opposition to FIFA’s proposal to expand the World Cup to 64 teams for the 2030 tournament, calling it “a bad idea.”

Speaking at UEFA’s congress in Belgrade on Thursday, Ceferin criticized the suggestion made by Ignacio Alonso, head of the Uruguayan football federation, during the FIFA Council meeting in March. The expansion would follow the 2026 World Cup’s increase from 32 to 48 teams across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ceferin emphasized that the expansion would not benefit the World Cup itself or the qualification process. “It’s surprising, and I think it’s a bad idea,” he stated, voicing his concerns about the proposal, which came as a surprise to many in the football community.

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted across three continents, with Portugal, Spain, and Morocco leading the charge, while matches will also be held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay to mark the centenary of the tournament. This decision paves the way for Saudi Arabia to host the 2034 World Cup.
