New Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, Unveils Plans for Comprehensive Renovation of 200-Year-Old Palace, Assures Preservation of Yoruba Culture and Tradition
The newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has announced a comprehensive plan to renovate the historic Alaafin’s palace in Oyo town, describing the move as long overdue. He assured that while the structure will undergo major reconstruction, its traditional and cultural essence will remain intact.
In an interview published by the Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, Oba Owoade explained that the palace originally built nearly two centuries ago by Atiba ‘Latunbosun, the first Alaafin of present-day Oyo has never undergone a significant overhaul.
“If you’ve visited the Aafin, you’ll agree it needs repairs. Some sections need rebuilding, others renovation. We’re planning to reconstruct without compromising on culture or tradition,” he said.
Oba Owoade also praised his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, for his role in promoting Yoruba heritage. “He really did well in projecting Yoruba culture and tradition. I want to build on that legacy and take it further,” he added.
Reflecting on his ascension to the throne, Oba Owoade revealed he initially declined the invitation to contest. “I was in Canada when my family reached out. I wasn’t interested at first, but after some persuasion, I agreed. I’m grateful to be here now as the Alaafin, and I’m here to stay,” he said.
Having lived abroad for over 20 years nine in the UK and twelve in Canada Oba Owoade recounted how he learned of his selection. “Around 5 a.m. Canadian time, I woke up and saw a message from my brother. The headline read, ‘Governor Makinde approves Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as Alaafin-elect.’ I thought it was a prank,” he said.
The monarch outlined a broad vision for Oyo, with a strong focus on youth empowerment, peace, and cultural preservation. “Our youths need jobs, security, and peace of mind. We’re planning vocational training in crafts, trades, and cybersecurity for both the underprivileged and graduates.”
He also disclosed plans to establish a community health centre offering free services to vulnerable groups, including widows and widowers. “I’ve shipped in hospital equipment, and the whole of Oyo is aware of this,” he noted.
To further honour those who have contributed to the town’s growth, Oba Owoade announced that some streets will be renamed after notable figures both past and present.
