Security Agencies Launch Major Operation in Anambra to Dismantle Monday Sit-at-Home, Restore Public Confidence, and Revive Economic Activities in Affected Areas
Heightened activity swept through parts of Anambra State on Monday as security forces ramped up efforts to dismantle the persistent Monday sit-at-home order that has crippled economic life across the region.
The intensified patrols focused primarily in Nnewi and Ihiala saw a heavy deployment of joint security operatives determined to restore normalcy and encourage residents to go about their lawful activities without fear of violence or intimidation.
Confirming the development, the Anambra State Police Command said the operation involved a coalition of security agencies, including the Nigerian Army (302 Artillery Regiment), Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Anambra State Vigilante Group.
In a statement released on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, described the patrols as part of a broader strategy to rebuild public trust and secure lives and property. “The Anambra State Police Command joint security team on Monday, April 7, 2025, intensified security patrols in the state, especially in Nnewi and Ihiala environs, to combat the Monday sit-at-home and encourage residents to go about their legitimate business without any fear,” Ikenga stated.
The patrols featured convoys of armed security vehicles in a visible show of force, meant to deter threats and reassure the public of their safety.
Commending the defiance of residents in Awka, Onitsha, and other parts of the state, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised their resilience and support for national unity. “We commend the bus drivers’ associations, market leaders, and other stakeholders for rejecting actions that undermine our national unity and disrupt daily life,” he said. “Their collaboration is crucial in our ongoing efforts to restore peace and revive the local economy.”
The police stressed that these renewed patrols are not just about enforcing law and order but also about reawakening the economy, especially on Mondays when fear-driven closures are most common.
“The Police-led Joint Security Force remains committed to ensuring public safety, preserving law and order, and fostering economic growth across Anambra State,” the statement concluded.
While unease lingers in some areas, Monday’s show of strength marks a significant move by authorities to reclaim public spaces and end the culture of fear surrounding the weekly lockdown.
