Nigeria to Introduce E-Visa System and Digital Landing/Exit Cards Starting May 1 to Streamline Travel and Enhance National Security
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced the imminent launch of an electronic visa (e-visa) system and digital landing/exit cards, aimed at bolstering national security and streamlining travel processes. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, revealed the initiative on Wednesday during a meeting with the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja.
Keyamo stated that the e-visa platform will allow visa applicants to submit requests and upload necessary documents online. Additionally, the current manual landing and exit cards will be digitalized, requiring visitors to pre-fill their information electronically before arriving in Nigeria.
Highlighting the collaborative nature of the project, Keyamo emphasized the government’s commitment to inter-ministerial cooperation. He noted that while the initiative primarily falls under the purview of the Ministry of Interior, relevant agencies including Immigration, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) are fully on board.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the new automated system will take effect on May 1st. He clarified that the e-visa application will be free of charge and is designed to simplify entry procedures while simultaneously enhancing national security measures through improved background checks.
Tunji-Ojo further explained that the NCAA will oversee the digital landing and exit cards, which travellers will be required to complete online prior to boarding flights to Nigeria. He also disclosed the existence of a central visa approval center equipped with trained personnel and integrated global criminal record databases.
Both ministers underscored the objective of facilitating entry into Nigeria without compromising security, emphasizing the crucial roles of their respective ministries in this joint endeavor.
