At Bola Ajibola Book Launch in Lagos, AGF Fagbemi Urges Nigerians to Shun Political Sentiment in Legal Matters, Calls for Strict Adherence to Constitution Amid Rivers Crisis

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has cautioned against the politicization of judicial matters, emphasizing the need to approach legal issues with objectivity and strict adherence to the Constitution.

Fagbemi made the statement in Lagos on Thursday during the presentation of a book titled “Tribulations and Trophies, Bola Ajibola in His Own Words!”—an autobiography of the late former Attorney-General of the Federation and Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Bola Ajibola.

He urged stakeholders to shun emotions and political sentiments when addressing legal questions, stating, “Nigerians should stop interpreting the law based on political partisanship. Let’s stick to what the law says.”

Reflecting on the current legal tussle over the situation in Rivers State, Fagbemi said he deliberately refrained from taking sides, noting that the matter is under judicial consideration. He warned against unnecessary public commentary, especially regarding the appointment of Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Administrator of the state.

“When issues like this come up, people should go and read very well and get themselves familiar with what the law says. It’s not a matter of sentiment or emotions, but a matter of basic facts on ground,” he said.

Paying tribute to Ajibola, who passed away on April 8, 2023, at the age of 89, Fagbemi described him as a reformer with impeccable character and integrity. He commended the late jurist for his contributions to law reforms, justice administration, and the establishment of key institutions, including Crescent University in Abeokuta.

The event was graced by several dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
