National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Bans Eedris Abdulkareem’s New Single ‘Tell Your Papa’ from Nigerian Airwaves for Criticism and Violation of Broadcasting Standards
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has barred Nigerian radio and television stations from playing Eedris Abdulkareem’s newly released single, Tell Your Papa, citing its “objectionable nature.”
The controversial track, released on Monday, openly criticizes President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly its economic policies. In the song, Abdulkareem addresses Tinubu’s son, Seyi, urging him to tell his father that Nigerians are suffering. The lyrics accuse the president of making “too many empty promises” and using what the artist dismisses as “balablu grammar.”
Some of the lyrics include:
“Tell your papa Seyi / Tell your papa country hard / Tell your papa people dey die / Seyi, ebi n pa mekunu / Tinubu, ebi n pa mekunu / Your papa no try.”
In a memo dated April 9 and signed by Susan Obi, Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, the NBC stated that the song violates Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which pertains to materials considered inappropriate for broadcast.
The commission described the content as a breach of public decency standards and urged all broadcasters to exercise discretion and refrain from airing the song.
“The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song Tell Your Papa by Eedris Abdulkareem, currently trending on social media, as inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable nature,” the memo read. “It is therefore classified as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB). Your cooperation and commitment to upholding these standards are greatly appreciated.”
