Court Nullifies Obasa’s Removal as Lagos Assembly Speaker, Declares January 13 Sitting Illegal and Reinstates Him
Lagos, Nigeria – In a decisive ruling delivered today, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly illegal and unconstitutional. The court nullified the January 13, 2025, proceedings and resolutions that led to Obasa’s ouster.
The judgment followed a suit filed by Obasa on February 12, 2025, challenging his removal. He had named the House of Assembly and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as defendants. Obasa, represented by Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), argued that his removal occurred during an Assembly recess while he was abroad, contending that the sitting was unlawfully convened without proper authorization.
Obasa’s legal challenge rested on nine grounds, citing the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Assembly’s Rules and Standing Orders.
The court’s ruling effectively reinstates Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and invalidates all decisions made during the contested January 13th session.
