Trump Administration Proposes Shutting Down 30 US Embassies and Consulates, Including Several Across Africa.
The Trump administration is reportedly planning to shut down nearly 30 U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, with several located in Africa, as part of a sweeping effort to scale back America’s diplomatic presence and cut federal spending.
A report by CNN on Wednesday, citing an internal U.S. State Department document, revealed that embassies in the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Lesotho, and South Sudan are among those listed for possible closure. A U.S. consulate in South Africa may also be affected.
In total, the document recommends closing 10 embassies and 17 consulates across multiple continents. While Africa is heavily impacted, other affected regions include Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Proposed closures include embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, and consulates in France, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
The proposed cuts are part of a broader cost-saving strategy reportedly influenced by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency, which aims to significantly reduce the size and spending of U.S. federal agencies, including the State Department.
The document also suggests a scaled-down U.S. presence in high-priority countries like Somalia and Iraq, which are central to America’s counterterrorism efforts.
There has been no official confirmation on whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the plan. A spokesperson for the department declined to comment on the leaked proposal.
