Air Peace Suspends All Enugu Flights, Cites Bad Runway and Safety Concerns, Moves Operations to Asaba
Air Peace has announced the suspension of all flights to and from Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, citing safety concerns over the airport’s deteriorating infrastructure.
In a statement released Saturday morning, the airline expressed deep worry over the condition of the airport’s runway, describing it as a major cause of flight disruptions and a serious safety risk. The airline said the situation had become unmanageable, prompting the indefinite halt in operations at the airport.
“At Air Peace, we prioritise safety over convenience. Suspending operations temporarily will allow the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to carry out the much-needed repairs,” the airline stated.
To accommodate affected passengers, Air Peace said all Enugu-bound flights will now operate through Asaba, Delta State. “We regret any inconvenience this change may have caused,” the airline added.
NEWS REVIEW reports that concerns over Nigeria’s airport infrastructure have continued to mount among aviation stakeholders. Many believe the spate of runway incursions recorded in 2024 stemmed from defective and aging runways.
Earlier in January, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, acknowledged the poor state of airport infrastructure during an interview with TVC. She revealed that several runways across the country had outlived their lifespan and disclosed that plans were underway to rehabilitate 17 runways and other related infrastructure, including perimeter roads and fencing.
According to Kuku, FAAN requires an estimated N580 billion to fix runways nationwide.
