2 More Bodies Recovered in Ojodu Building Collapse, Death Toll Reaches 7 as Government Promises Legal Action Against Owner
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Monday confirmed the recovery of two additional bodies from the rubble of the collapsed three-storey building on Oremeta Street, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos. This brings the total number of fatalities to seven.
The building, which housed the well-known Equal Right Restaurant and Bar, caved in around 9 a.m. on Saturday, trapping workers, customers, and a family of three. Locals revealed that the structure had been abandoned for over a decade before construction resumed recently on its top floor.
LASEMA spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, said the total number of victims stands at 20, with 13 rescued alive—comprising four adult females and nine adult males—and seven confirmed dead, including five adult females and two adult males.
He also stated that the search for more bodies has concluded, though outer and inner cordons remain in place to ensure safety at the site.
Meanwhile, Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, vowed that the building’s owner will be prosecuted.
“There is a procedure for investigating building collapses. The government will find out how it happened. Naturally, the law will take its course—the owner of the building will face the law,” Omotoso stated.
