Protesters Besiege Justice Ministry, Demand Full-Scale Probe into Ex-NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari over Alleged Multi-Billion Dollar Refinery Scandal and Dubious Oil Deals
ABUJA – Dozens of protesters under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption (CCAC) stormed the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja on Tuesday, calling for a thorough investigation into the activities of the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari.
The protesters, led by Comrade Kabir Matazu, submitted a petition at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, urging immediate judicial review of all transactions conducted under Kyari’s leadership, particularly in the last five years. They expressed disappointment that despite President Bola Tinubu’s removal of Kyari and the entire NNPCL board on April 2, 2025, no action has been taken to probe the alleged corruption that plagued the oil giant.
The group raised alarm over alleged financial mismanagement, including the controversial rehabilitation of government-owned refineries and the NNPCL’s supposed $2 billion debt to Matrix Energy—reportedly being serviced through daily crude oil allocations without payment transparency.
“This sack of Kyari and the NNPCL board was widely applauded by Nigerians, especially those of us who have been demanding transparency,” Matazu said. “Yet, no investigation has followed. Nigerians deserve answers.”
They also questioned the inconsistencies in reported investments, including the claimed $400 million investment by Matrix Energy in the Port Harcourt Refinery, despite a separate $1.5 billion government approval for its repair.
CCAC is demanding the immediate institution of a commission of inquiry to review all refinery repair contracts and agreements entered into by the NNPCL during Kyari’s tenure. They insist that a probe is essential to recover lost funds and to prevent a recurrence of such financial discrepancies under the current administration.
“The facts and figures don’t add up,” the group stated. “The Attorney General must act swiftly to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.”
