ABUJA – The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has begun compiling a list of retired civil servants who failed to fully repay housing loans collected while in service.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the Board’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Ngozi Obiechina.
Quoting the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, Obiechina said the move is aimed at recovering mortgaged properties from retirees who defaulted on their loan agreements.
Ahmed explained that the decision followed a recent memo from Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. The memo reminded civil servants that obtaining a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness to the FGSHLB and MDA Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society is a mandatory requirement for retirement.
“In line with the Public Service Rule 021002 (p), any public servant exiting the service must first obtain this certificate,” Ahmed stated.
She added that legal action would be taken where necessary to repossess properties from defaulters, stressing that this also applies to already retired officers who still owe.
The Board urged all affected retirees to regularise their loan status and obtain the required clearance without delay, noting that the list of defaulters will be shared with relevant regulatory bodies for recovery action.
“The FGSHLB remains committed to enforcing compliance and following due loan recovery processes,” she added.
