The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has emphasized the need for electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria to uphold fairness, transparency, and accountability in their dealings with consumers.
This call was made by the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, during the Electricity Consumer Forum held in Sango Ota, Ogun State, in collaboration with the Sango/Ota Area Community Development Committee (SACDC). Mr. Bello was represented at the event by Mrs. Bridget Etim from the Commission’s Ibadan Office.
According to the Commission, the three-day forum is convened under Sections 17, 127, 130, and 151 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 to bridge communication gaps between electricity consumers and service providers.
“Electricity is not just a commodity; it is a critical service that drives daily life, business activities, and national development,” Etim said. She acknowledged challenges such as inadequate metering, inaccurate billing, and infrastructural shortcomings, stressing the need for joint efforts to resolve them.
The forum, she explained, serves as a non-adversarial platform where consumers can gain insight into their rights and obligations, while representatives of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) are on ground to address complaints in real-time. This, she said, is part of the FCCPC’s mission to ensure consumer protection is practical, accessible, and effective.
Bello reiterated the Commission’s commitment to its mandate under the FCCPA, which includes educating consumers, resolving complaints, encouraging ethical practices among service providers, and fostering engagement aimed at improving the power sector.
In his remarks, the Zonal CDC Chairman of Ado Odo Ota Community, Prince Olatunji Onaolapo, described the forum as a “huge relief” for the community. “Electricity issues dominate our meetings and have long defied solutions. We believe this initiative will bring meaningful change to the challenges our people face,” he said.
