The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday called for an upward review of the retirement age for all categories of civil servants.
Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, urged the federal government to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service—currently applicable to teachers, health workers, and judges—to all public servants.
“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants,” Ajaero said while presenting the union’s demands.
In 2023, Ajaero had told reporters that the NLC would actively seek dialogue with President Bola Tinubu to push for the policy extension.
Currently, teachers across all government levels are beneficiaries of the new retirement age, a policy signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
