Gov. Okpebholo Raises Edo Minimum Wage to N75,000, Earns NLC Praise at May Day Rally for Bold Reforms in Education, Health, and Worker Welfare
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for increasing the state’s minimum wage from N70,000 to N75,000, calling the move a timely relief for workers battling economic hardship.
Acting NLC Chairman, Bernard Egwekhide, gave the commendation during the May Day celebration held Thursday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
“Just within six months in office, you have done excellently well for Edo State. Your performance is beyond our expectations as workers,” Egwekhide said. He praised the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare, describing the theme of the event — “Reclaiming the Civil Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship” — as apt and reflective of the struggles workers face.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier announced the new minimum wage of N75,000 for Edo workers. “It’s our way of saying thank you to Edo workers,” he said. “We believe this will make a real difference, and in return, we count on your renewed dedication as we build a better Edo together.”
The governor lauded the contributions of Edo workers and highlighted several welfare initiatives. These include the absorption of over 1,000 casual workers into the core civil service, the hiring of 500 new teachers, and an ongoing review of 3,000 casual teachers for full employment.
In the health sector, he disclosed that 450 clinical and non-clinical staff had been approved for recruitment, while 126 contract workers at the Edo State Specialist Hospital were regularised.
He also announced the clearing of salary arrears for Edo State Polytechnic staff and the resolution of delayed judicial appointments. Additionally, health insurance coverage has been approved for retirees.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to timely salary and pension payments, fair recruitment, and upholding the dignity of civil servants.
“As we mark this day, I join President Bola Tinubu and my fellow governors in wishing all Nigerian workers a peaceful and fulfilling celebration,” he said.
The May Day event was attended by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, SSG Musa Ikhilor, Chief of Staff Gani Audu, Head of Service Anthony Okungbowa, former Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu, APC State Chairman Jaret Tenebe, party chieftains, labour leaders, and civil servants.
