In a significant development at the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a prosecution witness disclosed on Friday that Simon Ekpa, an alleged supporter of Kanu, is set to be extradited from Finland to face charges in Nigeria.
PW-AAA, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative involved in Kanu’s 2015 arrest in Lagos, made this statement during cross-examination by Kanu’s defense counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, in the Federal High Court in Abuja. Due to security concerns, the witness’s real name was withheld.
The witness explained that while no weapons were found on Kanu or his female companion during their arrest, the items recovered—ranging from electronic devices to personal effects—might have a deeper significance linked to Kanu’s activities. However, he clarified that his role was limited to executing the arrest and obtaining a statement from Kanu, not analyzing the recovered items.
Earlier in the session, the court admitted several items seized from Kanu as exhibits. These included multiple laptops, iPads, modems, phones, a drone, and personal items such as wristwatches, perfumes, and two passports—one Nigerian and one British. Also recovered were documents related to IPOB and various accessories.
Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial until May 6, 7, and 8 for continued cross-examination, as the legal battle over Kanu’s activities intensifies.
