Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has confirmed he will run again in 2027 under the party’s platform.

Obi made the declaration in a 7-minute, 16-second video message shared on the party’s WhatsApp platform on Saturday while addressing a group of young supporters.

When asked directly about his political plans, Obi responded, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”

He attributed the ongoing internal crises in the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to alleged interference from the government. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere,” Obi stated.

Recalling a past experience, Obi said during the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, political issues within parties were promptly addressed. He noted that Yar’Adua had intervened when he approached him, instructing then INEC Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu, to resolve party disputes.

“But today, in all the parties, there are problems. These are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity,” Obi said.

He stressed the importance of a strong opposition for a functional democracy and urged Nigerians to take ownership of the electoral process to ensure their votes count.

Obi encouraged the youth not to lose hope, adding that resistance from those benefiting from the current system is expected when pushing for change.

The former Anambra State governor also advocated for a retirement age for politicians. He revealed that he would be 65 years old by the time of the 2027 elections and would not be interested in contesting in his 70s.
