The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has cautioned Nigerians against prematurely condemning former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged Naira abuse.
This comes in response to a viral video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration, where he was seen dancing as a man sprayed ₦1,000 notes in his direction, an act considered a violation of Nigeria’s currency handling laws.
The video sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians challenging the EFCC to arrest Tompolo and prove it is not selective in its enforcement of the law.
Speaking in an interview with TVC on Sunday, Olukoyede confirmed that Tompolo has been invited for questioning. He stressed that the anti-graft agency is already investigating the matter, including subjecting the video to forensic analysis, which could determine whether the footage was manipulated.
“We have invited Tompolo, all Nigerians know that. And we said no one is above the law,” Olukoyede stated.
He added, “Nobody should condemn Tompolo over this allegation. It remains an allegation for now. Until we conclude the case, we cannot say whether he is guilty or not. Every Nigerian deserves a fair hearing.”
