Saudi Arabia has confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, officially marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The announcement, made on Tuesday via Haramain Sharifain’s official page on X (formerly Twitter), states that Dhul Hijjah 1446 will commence on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Key dates for the Islamic holy season were also revealed:
- First Day of Dhul Hijjah – Wednesday, May 28, 2025
- Day of Arafah – Thursday, June 5, 2025
- Eid al-Adha (Sallah Day) – Friday, June 6, 2025
The Day of Arafah, observed on June 5, marks the spiritual peak of the Hajj pilgrimage, as millions of Muslims gather at Mount Arafat in devotion and prayer. This is followed by Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, on June 6—a major Islamic celebration that honors Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.
Haramain Sharifain also shared the traditional Talbiyah—a supplication recited by pilgrims entering the sacred state of ihram:
“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda, Wannimata, Laka Wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak.”
(“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You, and You have no partner.”)
With this announcement, Muslims around the world can now begin preparations for the sacred rituals of Hajj and Eid, including prayers, charity, and the symbolic sacrifice of livestock.
Last year, Eid al-Adha was observed on June 16, 2024.
