Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of highly rated forward Liam Delap in a deal worth £30 million, with only final formalities remaining.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Thursday that the Blues are ready to activate Delap’s release clause, with final talks between the club and the player’s representatives nearing conclusion. The move is expected to be finalised in time for Delap to feature at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
“Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long-term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca appreciation + UCL football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate £30m release clause. #CFC just wait for formal communication now,” Romano reported.
Delap, who scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League matches for Ipswich Town last season under Kieran McKenna, has chosen Chelsea over a possible return to Manchester City. Despite holding a £40 million buy-back clause, City decided not to re-sign the striker following Ipswich’s relegation.
New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca and the prospect of UEFA Champions League football are said to have played a key role in Delap’s decision to join the West London club.
