Kano State Government Declares Monday Public Holiday to Honour Fallen Athletes

KANO — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared Monday a public holiday to mourn the 22 athletes and officials from the state who tragically lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature, the Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a dark moment for the state. The accident occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences over this unfortunate incident,” Bature said.

Speaking from Saudi Arabia, where he is currently overseeing the 2025 Hajj operations, Governor Yusuf expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured,” he said.

He called on residents to remain calm and united during this difficult time and assured that the state government would provide full support to the families of the deceased and the injured.

Governor Yusuf also urged Imams and faithful across Kano and beyond to offer prayers for the souls of the departed and for comfort and strength for their grieving families.
