The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State over the tragic death of 21 athletes in an auto crash at Gadar Yankifi, Garun Malam Local Government Area.
The athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State when the accident occurred on Saturday. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, 21 members of the Kano State contingent died, while 11 others sustained injuries.
In a statement issued Saturday by its National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, NANS described the incident as a devastating blow to the student and sports communities.

“This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire nation, particularly the youth and sports communities, as we mourn the untimely demise of these talented individuals who dedicated their lives to representing their state and uplifting the spirit of unity through sports,” Adeyemi said.
He offered sympathies to the Kano State Governor, the State Sports Council, and all affected families, noting that the loss is not just personal but national.
Adeyemi called on federal and state authorities to take urgent steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future, including a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
