The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to establish magistrate courts at airports nationwide.
The move is part of the ongoing efforts to combat touting at Nigerian airports and ensure immediate judgment for those who violate airport regulations.
This was disclosed by FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, during a meeting in Abuja on Friday between FAAN management and heads of security agencies at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The meeting aimed to update airport stakeholders on recent developments, educate them on the strategic goals of the current management, and discuss ways to enhance passenger experience.
Mrs. Kuku highlighted the presence of touts and public loitering as significant challenges in ensuring a comfortable environment for genuine airport users.
“There are individuals who have no legitimate reason to be at the airport, and they continue to cause problems,” she said. “We have an anti-touting task force, and soon, we will begin prosecuting those involved in such activities or loitering at the airport and harassing passengers. This is not acceptable in other parts of the world, and our airports should be safe spaces.”
She also addressed car hire operators who violate protocols, warning that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.
Mrs. Kuku emphasized the importance of reducing manual baggage searches at the airport’s international wing. She stated that a system would be implemented where luggage would be screened through machines, allowing security officials to monitor contents in real-time and only subject certain bags to further inspection.
“We must streamline our processes and improve airport operations. This is the 21st century, and we need to stay up to date,” she concluded.
