The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the demobilization of 54 illegally mobilized graduates from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to prevent the issuance of National Service Certificates to unqualified individuals.

This was revealed in a statement signed by the Scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, on Friday night.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, adding that the illegal graduates would face prosecution.

Of the 54 individuals, 19 who initially registered online for mobilization have been barred from service, while the Scheme withheld the Certificates of National Service for four others.

Earlier on Monday, the NYSC had invalidated the Certificates of 101 illegally mobilized graduates from UNICAL who participated in the scheme between 2021 and 2023.

Following this, the University’s Pro-Chancellor, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), praised the Scheme for uncovering the fraudulent mobilization of fake graduates and vowed to take action against staff involved.

The NYSC DG also revealed that a bread seller was among those illegally mobilized from the University and commended Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi for alerting the NYSC to the issue.

“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar reported that she noticed unauthorized names on the institution’s list and informed us. We have since invalidated their certificates. I commend her for this,” Ahmed stated.

He further explained that the Scheme would strengthen its collaboration with Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders to curb the problem.

Ahmed emphasized that any failure in the mobilization process reflects on the integrity of the institution’s management and urged that only people of integrity should handle graduate data.

He also called on employers nationwide to verify the authenticity of National Service Certificates presented for job placements.
