The Rivers State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. George Mfongang, has expressed concern over the increasing trend of young Nigerian graduates migrating abroad in search of better opportunities.
Mfongang raised this issue during a meeting in his Port Harcourt office on Tuesday, where he received the Rivers State Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mrs. Nwamaka Ikediashi.
Highlighting Nigeria’s potential, Mfongang emphasized that the country has great opportunities for its graduates. He urged both leaders and citizens to be patriotic, disciplined, honest, and selfless in their efforts to improve the nation.
His comments followed a request by Mrs. Ikediashi for permission to educate corps members during orientation camps about the dangers of illegal migration.
Mfongang advised Ikediashi to direct her request through NAPTIP’s headquarters to the NYSC’s national headquarters.
He assured her that the inclusion of NAPTIP’s proposal in the NYSC’s nationwide orientation programs would greatly benefit corps members in Rivers State.
Earlier, Ikediashi had sought collaboration with the NYSC to raise awareness among corps members about the risks associated with illegal migration, particularly among young graduates.
She stressed that NAPTIP aims to partner strategically with NYSC to discourage corps members from engaging in illegal migration due to its significant dangers.
Ikediashi also warned corps members to be wary of fraudulent agencies and agents who deceive young graduates with promises of good jobs and better lives abroad.
She noted that many graduates have fallen victim to such scams, only to find themselves trapped in prostitution, drug trafficking, forced labor, or organ harvesting once they reach their destinations.
