The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans for a major protest within the next 72 hours in response to allegations of the fraudulent diversion of food supplies meant for Nigerians by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its Deputy Senate President, Huzaifa Sabo Usman, NANS explained that the protest is intended to draw national attention to the alleged misappropriation of 42,000 metric tons of food grains designated for poor and vulnerable Nigerians by NEMA.
Usman revealed that on August 14, 2024, NANS submitted a Freedom of Information request to NEMA titled “Alleged Diversion of 42,000 Metric Tons of Grains.”
Despite NANS’s efforts to investigate the matter following complaints from across the nation, there has been no satisfactory explanation regarding the missing food supplies, which multiple investigative reports and statements from several state governors confirm never reached their intended recipients.
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, through a letter dated June 27, 2024, confirmed that the 42,000 metric tons of assorted food grains were released to NEMA as per the President’s directive.
However, evidence indicates that NEMA staff, in collusion with corrupt state government officials, diverted these grains for personal gain, depriving many Nigerians of critical food supplies, Usman stated.
He added that the scale of this diversion points to deep-rooted corruption involving NEMA’s Director General and her management team.
This scandal is reminiscent of previous cases of mismanagement that sparked significant civil unrest, such as the nationwide End Bad Governance protests.
Given the seriousness of these allegations, NANS demands an immediate and transparent accounting of how the 42,000 metric tons of food grains were distributed.
Usman warned that if NEMA fails to provide a satisfactory response within 72 hours, NANS will proceed with a massive protest at NEMA headquarters to hold those responsible accountable.
NANS also called on all students and the general public to support this cause and join in the fight for justice and transparency.
