Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Saturday lauded the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, calling him a source of pride for the state and a man of integrity who served the judiciary with distinction and without blemish.
Makinde’s remarks were delivered during a special retirement prayer and thanksgiving ceremony held in Iseyin, Iseyin Local Government Area, in honor of the legal icon. Represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, the governor emphasized that Ariwoola’s retirement was a moment for celebration, underscoring his exemplary service as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
He stated, “Let’s look at it this way. Ascending through the judiciary, from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, and eventually to the Supreme Court, where one not only serves but becomes the Chief Justice of Nigeria, is a privilege earned through integrity and good character. It brings us great joy.
“To the best of my knowledge, Ariwoola is the only Justice from Oyo State to have held the position of CJN, so his retirement is truly a cause for celebration in the state. He retired honorably, and the large attendance today is proof of his outstanding performance as both a judge and the CJN, with nearly all Supreme Court Justices present to pay their respects.
“For us, his family, and the judiciary in the state, it’s a joyful occasion,” Makinde added.
In her address, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chair of the event, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, commended Justice Ariwoola for his exemplary leadership and positive impact on the judiciary. Earlier, Ashiru Kolawole, National Missioner of the Istjabah group, urged Ariwoola to express gratitude to Allah for his spotless career, advising him to draw closer to Allah and observe the five daily prayers as prescribed in Islam.
Born on August 22, 1954, Ariwoola was appointed the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria on June 27, 2022, following the resignation of former CJN, Tanko Muhammed. He was confirmed as the 22nd CJN by the Senate on September 21, 2022, and retired on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The event was attended by Justices from the Supreme and Appeal Courts, Oyo State Chief Judge Iyabo Yerima, members of the Bar and Bench from across the country, state officials, business leaders, royal fathers, religious leaders, as well as family and friends.
