Abdulmumuni Abiola, one of the sons of the late Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Moshood Abiola, has revealed that his father bequeathed £650,000 to his first four wives.
This information came to light during an episode of the Mic On Podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye of Channels TV, with the video being released on Saturday.
A copy of Abiola’s will displayed on the show indicated that his first wife, Simbiat, received £300,000; his second wife, Kudirat, was allocated £150,000; the third wife, Moriamo, received £100,000; and the fourth wife, Idiat, also received £100,000.
Abdulmumuni, whose mother is Kudirat Abiola, criticized his older brother Kola for allegedly denying him and his sisters their rightful inheritance from their father.
He mentioned that the family conducted several blood tests to determine which children were legitimate heirs entitled to a share of Abiola’s estate. When questioned about why some of Abiola’s children are struggling despite the considerable wealth left behind, Abdulmumuni explained, “To provide some context, we conducted blood tests to identify qualifying children. If you examine the will, it clearly names the wives and allocates funds to them.
My mother, as the second wife, was allocated £150,000. Kola pointed out that my mother passed away before my father, claiming British law prevented him from distributing the £150,000 to us. He also mentioned that his own mother was deceased and he hadn’t received the £300,000 for her. But since he’s the one distributing the money, it seems strange… If he wanted to, he could have given us our share.”
Abdulmumuni recalled how he and his siblings faced financial hardships after losing their parents, stating, “That money would have been beneficial to us.
Additionally, regarding my mother’s apartment in the UK, Kola sold it without informing my siblings or me. This shows a systematic effort to impoverish my mother’s side of the family, and for that reason, I doubt I will ever forgive him (Kola).”
Reflecting on their struggles in the UK, Abdulmumuni shared that he and his siblings faced significant difficulties while growing up. One of his sisters made braids for locals to earn money, while another traveled across American universities to give speeches.
He emphasized that Kola’s actions—selling their mother’s apartment without sharing the proceeds and withholding her share of the will—seemed like a deliberate attempt to undermine them, particularly as the other wives received their due shares.
Abdulmumuni lamented, “The part of the will that concerns me and my existence remains unaddressed. We couldn’t even afford proper shoes for school; my sister had to take me to Payless. I didn’t realize we had a rental property in the UK that could have provided us with income.
My sister, Kafilah, used to braid hair for us to buy food, and Hafsah, at just 20, was flying across America to earn $100 or $200 giving speeches.”
Their father, Abiola, was a prominent Nigerian businessman known for his polygamous lifestyle. He won the presidential election in 1993, which was annulled by military dictator Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. Abiola later proclaimed himself president based on the election results but was subsequently detained and died in custody in 1998.
In tribute to Abiola, former President Muhammadu Buhari changed Nigeria’s Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in 2018 and posthumously awarded him the highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.
