Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is facing mounting pressure after the team’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, which left them in 14th place in the Premier League.
With just one win in their last five matches, United’s underwhelming performances have raised serious concerns about Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.
The club’s recent 3-3 Europa League draw at Porto, where they squandered a 2-0 lead, along with a crushing 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, has reportedly led the club’s hierarchy to consider a managerial change.
According to an ESPN report last Monday, Ten Hag is under heavy scrutiny following the Spurs defeat. The report indicated that “there is now a genuine possibility that Ten Hag is nearing the end of his tenure as United manager,” with both the Europa League match against Porto and the Premier League game against Aston Villa seen as pivotal.
The Manchester Evening News reported on Monday that former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is being considered as a possible replacement for Ten Hag, should the club decide to make a change.
A key meeting is scheduled for Tuesday in London, where Manchester United officials will discuss Ten Hag’s future amid the team’s poor start to the season. The Dutch manager, who took over in 2022, is expected to meet with club executives soon to address the current situation.
Despite the growing speculation, Ten Hag remained composed when asked about his position following the draw at Villa Park.
“We communicate openly and transparently. I speak with the club’s officials regularly, and after every game, I focus on my work with the players. I anticipate discussions with the board soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich in 2023, is available and could step in if United opts for a change. He was reportedly considered by the club over the summer after a disappointing Premier League season.
As fans and analysts await the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting, the pressure continues to mount on Ten Hag, with a potential mid-season managerial change looming for United.
