The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been bestowed with the prestigious title of ‘Amir ul Mulukil Muslimin Fi Bilad,’ which translates to ‘Commander of Muslim Kings in Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States.’
The conferment ceremony, held at the Awujale’s palace in Ijebu-Ode, was organized by the League of Imams and Alfas from Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States.
Speaking at the event, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, urged Oba Adetona to continue utilizing his vast experience as a bold and compassionate leader to promote unity, peace, and religious tolerance across the country.
Governor Abiodun expressed that it was no surprise that Oba Adetona was chosen for this unique leadership role, given his outstanding leadership qualities and his significant contributions to society.
He said, “Today’s ceremony celebrates faith, values, and the courageous leadership exemplified by the Awujale throughout the years. Our new Amir embodies compassion, wisdom, and integrity, which are the defining traits of great leaders, and Kabiyesi is truly deserving of this new title.”
Governor Abiodun also noted that Oba Adetona’s appointment as Amir Mulukil Muslimin symbolizes inclusivity, peace, and justice, and that the monarch bridges the gap between tradition and modernity.
He further urged the Awujale to use his new role to continue fostering unity and peace, emphasizing that no nation can progress in a chaotic environment. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to promote religious tolerance and strengthen national unity.
During the event, the governor also announced the commencement of the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode expressway, revealing that President Bola Tinubu had approved the project. Governor Abiodun mentioned that he had personally sought the president’s intervention in rehabilitating the road, which has been in disrepair for years.
He stated, “The reconstruction of this crucial road, which serves 17 southern states, will begin today (Tuesday). After this event, I will meet with the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for the flag-off ceremony.”
Governor Abiodun commended President Tinubu for being a responsive leader committed to improving the country and encouraged citizens to continue supporting the administration.
Earlier in the ceremony, Professor Emeritus and Chief Imam of Gbagura, Abeokuta, Kamaldeen Balogun, urged the Awujale to further promote the development of Islam and the welfare of Muslims nationwide.
He encouraged the monarch to continue advocating for the installation and burial of traditional rulers according to their religious beliefs, as successfully implemented in Ogun State. Professor Balogun also suggested that the Awujale could immortalize his legacy by either establishing a university for Muslims or creating a world-class library.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including the Asiwaju of Ijebuland, Alhaji Adebola Adegunwa, former deputy governors Senator Adegbenga Kaka and Alhaja Salmot Badru, the paramount ruler of Yewaland and Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olori Omooba of Ijebuland, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, and other distinguished guests.
