The Libyan Football Federation has addressed the reasons behind the Nigerian Super Eagles’ prolonged delay at Al Abraq International Airport, attributing it to standard air traffic and logistical issues rather than any intentional wrongdoing.
In a statement released on Monday via X, the LFF clarified that the Nigerian team’s flight diversion was not meant to be a hostile act.
“We strongly reject any accusations suggesting foul play or sabotage in this matter,” stated the LFF.
They noted that just a week prior, the Libyan national team encountered similar difficulties upon arriving in Nigeria for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. “We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation. It’s important to mention that our national team faced significant challenges last week when we arrived in Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations qualification match.
“Despite the obstacles we faced, we refrained from making public accusations or questioning the integrity of Nigerian authorities,” the statement continued.
According to the LFF, the diversion of the Nigerian delegation’s chartered ValueJet flight to Al Abraq International Airport instead of Benghazi was due to air traffic control protocols and security checks that are standard in international travel. “These are common procedures at airports around the world, and while unfortunate, delays or rerouting are not unusual,” the federation explained.
The statement emphasized the LFF’s respect for Nigeria and clarified that there was no intention to create difficulties for the Super Eagles, who had been stranded at the airport for over 15 hours. The Libyan FA expressed concern over the situation but reiterated that such logistical challenges are not uncommon.
They also reaffirmed Libya’s hospitality toward visiting teams, stating, “We have always prioritized treating all visiting teams, including our African brothers and other international delegations, with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
The Libyan FA called for a resolution through mutual understanding and emphasized football’s role in promoting unity.
“Hosting these events is a significant honor for us, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests. Our doors are open to our Nigerian brothers and all African teams, as we continue to foster the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in the world of football,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has filed a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football regarding the incident and is making plans to return the Super Eagles home.
