Starting November 1, 2024, a one-way flight ticket from Lagos to Abuja on Air Peace will cost N200,000.

The challenging economic situation has negatively impacted the aviation industry, prompting airlines to raise their fares, much to the dismay of passengers.

As a result, some Nigerians are opting for road transportation instead of flying.

Recent checks by our correspondent revealed that Air Peace has increased its fares to N200,000, making it the most expensive option among domestic airlines. While Air Peace lists one-way tickets between Lagos and Abuja at N200,000 or more on its website, Aero charges between N94,000 and over N109,000, Arik Air ranges from N104,405 to N139,292, and Ibom Air’s prices vary from N124,000 to over N133,000.

The soaring airfares have left many passengers stranded at airports lately, unable to book flights to their intended destinations.

The most heavily affected routes, Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos, have seen many travelers struggling to secure seats. An anonymous Air Peace official confirmed the fare increase, attributing it to Nigeria’s worsening economic challenges.

“When you buy a ticket and look at the breakdown, you’ll see that we, as an airline, are suffering. The costs of running the business are spiraling out of control,” she said. “As we all know, these burdensome taxes go to the government, leaving businesses, especially airlines, with no choice but to raise fares. It is what it is.”

Attempts to reach Toyin Olajide, the Chief Operating Officer of Air Peace, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or text messages seeking clarification.

A businessman, Adeleke Aina, who has been flying for years, expressed his frustration, stating that with airfares rising daily with little explanation beyond economic issues, he may have no choice but to switch to road transport. “This is detrimental to everything. Fuel prices have skyrocketed, and the Federal Government seems indifferent to this situation. I am concerned for this country.”
