Ruben Amorim is set to be confirmed as Manchester United’s new manager on Thursday after the club reportedly reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon.

According to The Athletic, the 39-year-old will remain with the Portuguese league leaders for their next three matches, including a Champions League clash against Manchester City next week. He is expected to take the reins at Old Trafford during the November international break, with his debut as manager anticipated to be United’s away match against Ipswich on November 24.

Sky Sports reported that Manchester United has agreed to pay an additional one million euros over Amorim’s 10 million euro ($11 million) release clause to expedite his early release from Sporting. On Tuesday, Sporting confirmed to the Lisbon stock exchange that United was prepared to meet this release clause.

Manchester United made the decision to end Erik ten Hag’s two-year tenure following a 2-1 loss to West Ham, which left them 14th in the Premier League standings. Amorim quickly became the club’s primary choice for the role.

In the meantime, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy led United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester in the League Cup’s fourth round on Wednesday. “I came here as an assistant to help the club,” Van Nistelrooy stated. “I’m here to support however needed and, looking ahead, I’ll be here to help build the club’s future.”

Despite significant summer spending, Ten Hag ultimately faced the consequences of United’s disappointing start to the season, with only one win in their last eight games across all competitions before Wednesday’s victory.
