Telecom Tariffs to Rise, But Not by 100% – Minister Bosun Tijani
The Nigerian government has confirmed an impending increase in telecom tariffs, although the hike will be less than the 100% proposed by telecommunications operators.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced this during an interview with journalists on Wednesday. Tijani stated that while a tariff increase is necessary to support the industry, the government will ensure a balanced approach to protect consumers.
Telecom operators have been pressing for a significant tariff adjustment, citing rising operational costs due to inflation and increased service delivery expenses. The Minister acknowledged the operators’ concerns but emphasized the need for a thorough review to determine a suitable tariff increase.
The Nigerian Communications Commission will issue directives to guide the implementation of the new tariffs, aiming to strike a balance between industry sustainability and consumer affordability.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the telecommunications sector, including enforcing regulations to safeguard infrastructure and increasing local content in the industry.
