ATCON Defends Telecom Tariff Hike, Says Increase Is Crucial for Digital Expansion, Better Service Quality, and Economic Growth

The Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has acknowledged public concern over the recent increase in telecom tariffs but insists that the hike is necessary to sustain and improve digital services across the country.

Speaking in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, ATCON President Tony Emoekpere explained that telecom operators have struggled with financial challenges, including forex fluctuations, high energy costs, and multiple taxation. Without a pricing adjustment, he warned, Nigeria’s digital infrastructure risks stagnation.

Emoekpere described the increase as an investment in the nation’s digital future, enabling broader 4G and 5G expansion, improved network reliability, and faster broadband speeds. He assured that consumers would see tangible improvements such as fewer dropped calls and enhanced connectivity for businesses, education, and fintech services.

He further urged the government to address key industry challenges, including streamlining Right of Way permits, protecting telecom infrastructure from vandalism, and reducing excessive taxation.

While acknowledging the public’s right to demand better services, Emoekpere expressed optimism that the new tariff would drive quality improvements, with telecom operators committed to meeting regulatory standards set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
