Senate Committee Vows to Reverse ‘Japa’ Migration Trend, Plans to Engage Diaspora and Boost National Patriotism through Strategic Collaborations
ABUJA – The Senate has declared its intention to reverse the ongoing mass emigration of Nigerians, commonly known as “Japa.” Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, stated that stemming this tide is a top priority.
The committee plans to foster patriotism by collaborating with stakeholders to improve the economy and create opportunities for Nigerians, particularly youth. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted India as a successful example of reversing brain drain through strategic economic development, particularly in the ICT sector.
The committee will begin by compiling a database of Nigerians abroad and working with international organizations to attract them back home. Former committee chair, Senator Victor Umeh, expressed confidence in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s leadership and ability to leverage the potential of the Nigerian diaspora.
