Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu Pays Tribute to Herbert Wigwe at First Year Memorial, Reflecting on His Impact on State Development and Vision for Africa

Lagos, Nigeria – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State yesterday eulogized the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director of Access Holdings, at a memorial service marking the first anniversary of his passing. Sanwo-Olu described Wigwe as a staunch supporter of his administration’s development programs, stating that his absence is deeply felt and that some projects would have progressed faster had he lived. “Across the states, there are projects with Herbert Wigwe’s footprint,” the governor noted.

The memorial, held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, honored Wigwe, his wife Doreen, and son, Chizi, who tragically died in a helicopter crash last year. The event drew dignitaries including French President Emmanuel Macron, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, and numerous business leaders.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized Wigwe’s visionary leadership, his belief in Nigeria and Africa, and his ability to turn visions into reality. He lamented the loss, saying, “His absence is deeply felt in Lagos State.” He also described Wigwe as a brother and friend, sharing a passion for good governance and the people.

Former President Obasanjo echoed these sentiments, highlighting Wigwe’s resilience, dedication to partnership, and commitment to nurturing relationships. He stated, “His legacy is a testament to what Africans can achieve through vision, determination, and collaboration.”
