Ousted Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Takes Assembly to Court, Challenges Removal During Recess and Demands Reinstatement
Lagos lawmaker Mudashiru Obasa has taken legal action to contest his removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa has sued the Assembly and the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, at a State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his ouster during recess was unlawful.
In a motion dated February 12, 2025, Obasa, through his legal team led by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, requested an expedited hearing of the case. He was removed on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country. Upon his return, he asserted that he remains the Speaker.
Obasa seeks a court order for a swift hearing of his case and a seven-day deadline for the defendants to respond. He also requested a three-day timeframe for his reply. His case hinges on the interpretation of constitutional provisions and Assembly rules, questioning the legality of the House’s proceedings during recess.
Citing public interest, Obasa argues that a prompt ruling is necessary to prevent legislative disruptions. The court has yet to fix a date for the hearing.
