Ogbomoso Throne Battle Intensifies: Prince Kabir Olaoye Heads to Supreme Court After Appeal Court Affirms Oba Ghandi Olaoye as Soun
Ogbomoso prince, Kabir Olaoye, has escalated his legal battle over the Soun of Ogbomoso throne to the Supreme Court, challenging last Tuesday’s Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed Oba Ghandi Olaoye as the rightful monarch.
Prince Kabir had filed a suit in 2022 (HOG/27/2022) contesting the nomination and selection of Oba Olaoye, citing breaches in the Soun Chieftaincy Declaration. Despite the ongoing legal tussle, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved Olaoye’s appointment, leading to his installation in September 2023.
However, an Oyo State High Court ruling in October 2023 nullified Oba Olaoye’s selection. The state government swiftly obtained an injunction to halt enforcement of the ruling and proceeded with his coronation in December 2023 while appealing the verdict.
Last week, the Court of Appeal in Ibadan overturned the High Court’s ruling, reinstating Oba Olaoye. In response, Prince Kabir vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court, declaring his dissatisfaction with the appellate court’s verdict.
“We are not relenting until we reclaim our mandate through the Supreme Court,” he stated.
