Governor Makinde Announces Plan to Reveal Preferred Successor in January 2026, Reaffirms Influence in Oyo’s Political Future and Calls for Unity During Ramadan
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has revealed that he will announce his preferred successor in January 2026.
Makinde made the disclosure on Monday at the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture held at the Government House arcade in Ibadan. The lecture, themed ‘Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective’, was delivered by the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoland, Yunus Teliat.
Addressing attendees in Yoruba, Makinde expressed gratitude to Muslim leaders for their support and urged continued prayers for his administration. In a lighthearted remark, he advised socialite Abbas Oloko not to remove his billboard at Isale Alfa, as the image of his chosen successor would be displayed there in January 2026.
“With political activities set to begin in January 2026, I will reveal the picture of the person to be placed there,” he said.
Makinde, who won re-election in 2023 and is ineligible for another term, has previously stated his intention to influence the choice of the next governor, particularly within the PDP. In October 2024, he asserted that while the people of Oyo State would ultimately decide, he would play a significant role in the selection process.
“Those aspiring to be the next governor must wait. I still have until May 29, 2027, and I’ll have a say in who succeeds me,” Makinde said.
