Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, Begins 21-Day Sacred Rites Ahead of Coronation, Enforces Night Curfew in Oyo

OYO—The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as ÒRÒ ÌPÊBÍ, a crucial step before his ascension to the throne.

The Chief of Staff to the monarch, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, confirmed the development in a statement released in Ibadan. The rites began on March 7, 2025, and will conclude on March 29, 2025.

As part of the tradition, a curfew will be enforced in Oyo township from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Anyone found violating the curfew will be arrested and detained until 7 a.m. the next morning.

The ÒRÒ ÌPÊBÍ requires the incoming Alaafin to enter a state of absolute seclusion, a sacred tradition that must be observed by all.

The coronation ceremony is set for Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
