Tinubu Rejects N942bn Census Budget, Calls for Cost Reduction, Proposes NYSC Deployment, and Sets Up Committee to Align Census with Economic Realities
President Bola Tinubu has declined a N942 billion budget proposal from the National Population Commission (NPC) for the upcoming national housing and population census, citing the need for cost-cutting measures.
Sources privy to a high-level meeting on February 24 at the State House disclosed that Tinubu suggested deploying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to reduce personnel costs. He also announced plans to form a committee to reassess the census budget in line with Nigeria’s current financial realities.
“We must ascertain who we are, how many we are, and how to manage our data,” Tinubu emphasized, stressing the importance of an accurate census for national planning. He also underscored the role of biometric capturing and multiple identification features in improving data accuracy.
Despite previous delays and funding constraints, Tinubu remains committed to conducting the census but insists that expenses must be significantly reduced before proceeding.
