NAFDAC Cracks Down on Illegal Drug Trade in Oyo: Destroys N100bn Worth of Banned Pharmaceuticals, Arrests 40 Suspects in Nationwide Raid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated and destroyed banned pharmaceutical products valued at N100 billion, arresting over 40 suspects in a major crackdown.

NAFDAC Director General, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the destruction exercise at Moniya Dumpsite, Akinyele LGA, Oyo State. Represented by Mrs. Yedunni Adenuga, Director of Narcotics and Control Services, she revealed that the seized products including Analgin and Tramadol 225mg were recovered from markets in Idumota, Onitsha, Ariaria, and Ezeuku.

Prof. Adeyeye described the discovery of counterfeit and unregistered drugs in these markets as “mind-boggling”, warning that such substances contribute to national insecurity. She credited the successful operation to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who deployed over 1,000 security personnel, including the military, police, and DSS.

Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Pharm. Shaba Mohammed, emphasized that selling drugs in open markets, vehicles, kiosks, and on the streets is illegal and punishable by law.

Investigations are ongoing, and those found guilty will face appropriate sanctions.
