Lagos Court Orders ‘Gangs of Lagos’ Producers and Amazon to Apologize for Misrepresenting Eyo Masquerade and Isale Eko in Controversial Film
The Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU) has welcomed a Lagos High Court ruling mandating the producers of Gangs of Lagos to issue a formal apology over the film’s portrayal of the revered Eyo masquerade.
The court-approved settlement follows a lawsuit filed by the IDU, which sought N10 billion in damages against Amazon and the filmmakers for allegedly misrepresenting Isale Eko as a hub of criminality and depicting the Eyo masquerade as a violent gang.
Justice Idowu Alakija’s ruling, dated February 20, stated that all parties had agreed to an amicable resolution. The film’s producers, including director Jade Osiberu and producer Kemi Lala Akindoju, along with Amazon Web Services Nigeria, are required to acknowledge the IDU’s concerns and issue an unreserved apology.
IDU Chairman Adeniji Kazeem (SAN) expressed satisfaction with the ruling, calling it a victory for the protection of Nigeria’s cultural heritage. He also urged stricter scrutiny of films that depict indigenous traditions.
